MAN VS. L.A.

November 24, 2009.  Late morning (10:30AM) to evening (9PM).

Mission:  To visit CityWalk, Hollywood and Highland and LA Live in an 8 hour span.

Outcome:  Not everything went as planned (I managed to procure 0 event tickets for the day, which was a bummer), but all in all, it was a delightful day.

Accomplished:  Trip to Universal, visited 2 Hard Rock Cafes, toured the Hollywood Wax Museum, toured the Kodak Theater, toured the Grammy Museum and watched 2 movies that were filmed at the Staples Center.

10:30 AM- got gas and left Camarillo- took 101 to Lankershim

11:20 AM- arrived at CityWalk (free parking with annual pass)

11:30 AM- did a lap around Universal Studios

Saw a bunch of Allie’s favorite characters.   Found a store that sells cool Dora the Explorer stuff for Allie.   Cruised by Krustyland, Curious George Waterpark and saw Dora and George.     Was unsuccessful in getting show tickets to Jay Leno (my real purpose for going there at all).   Oh well.

11:55 AM- stopped by Starbucks to grab a coffee (used my $25 gift card and got the Annual pass discount)

12:00 PM- nice lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe (with Starbucks in hand).   Practically had the place to myself.   Watched some videos and had lunch.  The Chicken salad was awesome.  Used the credit balance on my All Access Passes to pay for part of lunch and a souvenir on the way out (like I need more crap from the Hard Rock!)

1:00- arrived at Hollywood and Highland.   Used free voucher along with Universal Annual Pass to get in the Wax Museum (a $25 value).  It was an awesome experience for free.  Check out the guy groping Britney Spears in the second picture.

1:30 PM- took the Kodak Theater tour.   Pictures were not allowed, but I toured the VIP lounge, a balcony suite, the backstage area and was able to stand onstage for a few minutes.    That stage is huge.   Learned many interesting facts about the Academy Awards and how the theater was specifically designed for the event.   Got a free postcard on the way out.

2:00 PM- went to the new Hard Rock Cafe on Hollywood Blvd.  Didn’t buy anything.  Tried to get some free show tickets for Jimmy Kimmel in front of the Chinese Theater- no luck there.   Checked out the entrance to the Star Trek Exhibit.  Admission was $16, so I scratched it (would pay a dollar- Star Trek is lame).  Went to the visitor center to validate my parking (4 hours for $2).    Got a discount card to use next time.

2:45 PM- left for Downtown LA.    Traffic was bad, so I got off the 101 at Vermont and took Wilshire Blvd. to LA Live.

3:15 PM-  Parked at the East lot garage in LA Live, went upstairs and toured the Grammy Museum.  Checked out the exhibits and watched the 50th Grammy awards movie inside their theater.  Met with the membership manager and upgraded/ renewed my membership in hopes of getting tickets to the Awards Nomination show next week- no luck there!  Saw some cool merchandise at the gift shop that I am going back to get on my next visit….

4:00 PM- quick trip to Starbucks next to the Nokia Theater.   Used my gift card for another coffee.

4:15PM- walked past Staples Center.   Spike Lee was doing a book signing at 5:00.  Walked to the Regal Theater where I saw the MJ Premiere last month to check out show times.    Decided to head towards home and catch a movie on the way back instead.

4:30- Left LA Live to avoid the upcoming Laker game (horrible traffic- took the 5 to the 118- sat on the freeway for what seemed endless time.)

6:30 PM- go to post office in Camarillo

6:45PM- go to the Edwards in Camarillo to see “This is It” again (used my free ticket from theater and got $1 popcorn with my rewards card).   Sat front row center.  Great show- I’d probably even see it a third time.

9:00 PM Returned Home and called it a day.
